Thank you for your interest in our graduate program in mathematics. The following is a check-list of all items that you will need to complete to apply for our Graduate Program in Mathematics.

In order to evaluate your application, we need the following documents:

  • Apply on line through "Texas Common Application Form." In case you are unable to do so, please let us know so that we should send paper application form to you by regular mail.
  • Two copies of your official transcripts with degree(s) posted of the colleges and/or universities you have attended in the past.
  • Official GRE scores. You must take the General Test. Our College guidelines require a total of 1100 or above on the Verbal and Mathematical portions of the Test. Your official GRE scores for the Subject Test in Mathematics is recommended, but not required. If the University that you graduated from is not well-known to the members of our faculty, then this can be extremely useful information when we are evaluating your application.
  • Official TOEFL scores. For unconditional admission we require a minimum score of 550 (or 213 for the computer version test). We also accept official IELTS score with the minimum score 6.5.
  • A short "Statement of Interests and Goals." Some topics to address: favorite courses; prizes or awards in mathematics or related areas; experience in using or teaching mathematics; motivation for beginning or returning to graduate school; expectations for graduate training; immediate and eventual career goals.
  • A list of advanced (postcalculus) mathematics courses taken, including title, text (if any), instructor, and grade received.
  • Three letters of reference; at least one should be from a professional mathematician.
  • ** Official TSE (the Test of Spoken English) scores (score of 50 or higher).
  • ** Signed "Letter of Financial Backing."

** Please Note- The Mathematics Department can begin to evaluate your application and give you an indication of whether or not we will admit you (with or without financial support), prior to receiving the items marked with a **.

Further explanation of these items can be found on the University's web site under Information for International Students.

Sending all correspondence directly to the Department of Mathematics will facilitate the admission process.

Deadlines for admission for INTERNATIONAL students are:

New Teaching Fellow Students

If you are a TF or TA (not RA) who is not a native English speaker, please read the following information carefully.
By a law of Texas State and a policy of the University of Houston, if one of the following two conditions does not apply, a TF or TA (not RA) must take the Test of Spoken English (TSE) or Spoken Proficiency English Assessment Kit (SPEAK) and score at at least 50: (1) The student's primary spoken language is English; or (2) The student has completed baccalaureate degree requirements at a regionally accredited institution in U.S. or in some countries where English is the medium of instruction.

SPEAK is a local version of TSE. Based on the past experiences, it could be very difficult for some students to pass SPEAK (or TSE). Therefore, we provide an alternative as follows:

The department requires that any graduate student who has not passed SPEAK test must take the course LCC 6034: English for International Teaching Assistants and Faculty, which is offered by the Language and Culture Center (LCC). If you pass this course, it is equivalent to passing the SPEAK test. The cost $ 360 has to be paid by the students by a Texas law.

This course is a non-credit course. To register for this course, students must go to the LCC between Monday, September 6 and Friday, September 10 (It is not a regular registration). The registration form will be available in the Roy Cullen Bilding beginning the week of August 30. The class will begin in the week of September 13 (not in the first week of the university). Notice that the prerequisite of SPEAK test, based on an agreement between the Math Department and LCC, can be waived for new students who obviously cannot pass SPEAK test.

This course will be three hours of class per week. Its schedule is: MW or TTh, 4:00-5:30 pm for twelve weeks. Notice that it is possible that the instructor could change schedule to fit with mojarity students' time schedules.

For more information, please contact the Director of Graduate Studies.
