Graduate Program

Admission Requirements
International Applicants

Thank you for your interest in our graduate program in mathematics. The following is a check-list of all items that you will need to complete to apply for our Graduate Program in Mathematics.

In order to evaluate your application, we need the following documents:

• Completed form, "International Student Application for Graduate Studies". This form is downloadable from the web at or contact the math department and we will mail you an application packet. Contrary to the instructions on the admission form, please send all correspondence directly to the Department of Mathematics.
  
• Two copies of your official transcripts with degree(s) posted of the colleges and/or universities you have attended in the past.
  
• Official GRE scores. You must take the General Test. Our College guidelines require a total of 1000 or above on the Verbal and Mathematical portions of the Test. Your official GRE scores for the Subject Test in Mathematics is recommended, but not required. If the University that you graduated from is not well-known to the members of our faculty, then this can be extremely useful information when we are evaluating your application.
  
• Official TOEFL scores. For unconditional admission we require a score of 550 or above.
  
• ** Official TSE scores (score of 50 or higher)
  
• A short "Statement of Interests and Goals." Some topics to address: favorite courses; prizes or awards in mathematics or related areas; experience in using or teaching mathematics; motivation for beginning or returning to graduate school; expectations for graduate training; immediate and eventual career goals.
  
• A list of advanced (postcalculus) mathematics courses taken, including title, text (if any), instructor, and grade received.
  
• Three letters of reference; at least one should be from a professional mathematician.
  
• ** Signed "Letter of Financial Backing."
  
• ** Signed "Statement of Understanding"
  
• ** Two passport-sized photos of yourself.
  
• ** International students are charged a fee of $75 in U.S. currency made payable to the University of Houston. This is a nonrefundable Application fee.
  

** Please Note: The Mathematics Department can begin to evaluate your application and give you an indication of whether or not we will admit you, prior to receiving the items marked with a **.

Sending all correspondence directly to the Department of Mathematics will facilitate the admission process.

** Deadlines for admission for US students are:
FALL Semester 1999 -- May 1, 1999
SPRING Semester 2000 -- October 1, 1999

If you are interested in a Teaching Assistantship, please have your application completed by March 15. Teaching Assistantships are generally offered for students beginning in the Fall semester. Click here to go to the Teaching Assistantship application form on our web site.
