Contractive approximate identities - the Quest for a Little Bit
of Positivity in Operator Algebras
Monday, August 23 3pm, 646 PGH
Abstract
We show that in every nonzero operator algebra with a contractive
approximate identity, there is an operator T such that || I - T ||
≤1.
In fact, there is a contractive approximate identity consisting of
operators T with || I - 2T || ≤ 1.
