Colloquium

Abstract

I will present the history and early ideas that provided the foundations of stabilized and variational multiscale methods in CFD as we know them today. I will also give some examples of how these have influenced computational fluid dynamics and provide examples of advanced applications. Finally, I will describe some contemporary research problems and open questions.

Key Words: Finite Elements, Isogeometric Analysis, Stabilized Methods, SUPG, Galerkin Least Squares, Variational Multiscale Method, Fine-scale Green’s Function, Turbulence Modeling, Monotone Methods
